Wisdom tooth extraction is a very common dental procedure, about 10 million procedures are done in theU.S. every year. Wisdom teeth extraction is the process of removing one or more of the third molars, which are located at the top and bottom of the back part of the mouth. By the age of 18, the average adult has 32 teeth; 16 teeth on the top and 16 teeth on the bottom. The average mouth is only made to hold 28 teeth, therefore trying to fit another four teeth into the mouth can be rather painful. By removing the wisdom teeth before they fully grow into the mouth you can avoid oral health problems and overcrowding of the mouth.

Here at Caprock Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery we specialize in wisdom teeth extraction and provide an easy and smooth process before and after your procedure. Our knowledgeable and experienced staff ensures that your mouth is in good hands, and provides a comfortable setting for your procedure.

Here are some helpful tips we suggest to help speed up the recovery process after the procedure:

  1. Rinse the mouth gently with warm salt water (½ TSP salt & 1 cup water) every few hours
  2. Try to avoid using straws, instead use a spoon!
  3. Do not drink/ eat liquids that are too hot
  4. 3 hours post surgery you can replace the gauze with a moist tea bag to help with clotting

Swelling and bleeding is completely normal throughout the recovery process. Be sure to rest up and enjoy some cold ice cream and a good movie!
